The R32/R38's did come with spring loaded gates.

The End Gates were a one piece assembly that was mounted on pivots and were spring loaded. They slipped into a slot on the ends of the cars. It can be duplicated for use on resin models but would take somebody that can work with brass or other metal to fabricate the gates. The hardest part would be getting the springs.

: Hey, didn't the HO MTS R-32/38's come with spring-loaded end gates for a more prototypical operation and made close spacing between cars possible? Does anyone know the design of the mechanism for the end gates and how it works? And if so, is it too expensive/difficult to mimic on resin models?
